Airedales are not difficult to train, but some degree of training is necessary. They are not always friendly towards other dogs, so it is imperative that you are able to control your dog in social environments. In that regard, the sooner you begin socializing and training your Airedale Terrier, the better.

Importantly with Airedales, they should not be treated harshly. They do not react well to being shouted at for instance. Commands should be short, simple but firm; and always consistent.

The Airedale Terrier reacts well to obedience training. In that respect, they are considered one of the most intelligent and easily trainable of breeds. For that reason also training should be varied and interesting for your dog. Airedale Terriers need to be mentally stimulated. Simply throwing a stick for your Airedale to fetch is not enough. Be creative when training your Airedale Terrier. Airedales have a tremendous capacity for learning. The more varied your training methods, the happier they will be.

Importantly, remember that you and your family are the only ones who can ever teach your Airedale what is acceptable behaviour and what is not. An Airedale puppy does not know and will never know if you do not teach it. And don’t think that training can wait until it is older. It can’t. Teaching your Airedale Terrier right from wrong and good from bad has to begin from day one. Your Airedale puppy will be much happier if it understands just what is expected of him.

If you need help with training your Airedale, there are bound to be dog training classes in your area. There are also many excellent books available on the subject. One we can highly recommend is The Airedale Terrier Today by Janet Huxley.
