What Are Airedales Really Like?

Airedales are intelligent, independent dogs, traits shared by many terrier breeds. Fun loving dogs with a keen sense of humour, they were nonetheless bred to work and hunt. This should be borne in mind before you buy an Airedale Terrier.

Because of its lineage, the Airedale Terrier is not for everyone. Their independent thinking means that you have to think like an Airedale in order to get the best out of it. They are not a breed of dog that will happily carry out boring tasks like fetching a stick. They need more mental stimulation than that, which is why some consider the Airedale Terrier to be a difficult dog to train, not because they lack the intelligence, but because they have sufficient grey matter to know when a task is meaningless and when it is not.

Airedale Terriers do need training though, just as they need early socialization. Their natural instinct is to chase its prey, so they need to be made aware that such behaviour is not acceptable.

Airedales are highly trainable nonetheless, and excel at dog agility and obedience trials. They also excel at Schutzhund, a sport developed in Germany in the 1900s, initially to determine a German Shepherd’s suitability for police work. Other¬†intelligent, working dog breeds now take part in this sport, including the Airedale Terrier.

In summary, the Airedale Terrier makes a wonderful family pet providing it is properly trained and socialized from an early age. Training should always be positive, varied and mentally stimulating for your Airedale.
